A body in a recovery room isn't out of the ordinary at a busy hospital-unless it's a general surgeon's corpse. In a titillating mystery that upends the illusions that surround medical shows on television, author James D. Beeson, who is a real doctor, shows how behind-the-scenes, it is a constant bad-hair day for hospitals and their crews. Beeson turns this premise into a hairy one, an emergency room start to his foray into detective thrillers. The erstwhile corpse, that of a Dr. Racket, is the Death in the Recovery Room that turns an ordinary hospital into a nest of conspirators who have it in for him:

"The body in question (Dr. Racket's) was that of a general surgeon who was verbally abusive, loud, easily angered, (lascivious) and marginally competent."

Thus, Lieutenant Larry Garret has his work cut for him, as nearly everyone in contact with the late Dr. Racket had reason to dislike him. Which of his many medical enemies fired the fatal shot, is the first 64-dollar question in this tightly-paced and tongue-in-cheek whodunit. Garret finds things that make him ask, "Is something more deadly going on here?"

Well he might, because soon another body turns up in the same recovery room where Dr. Racket was found. And when a third one appears, then it would seem that the hospital is under the itchy scalpel hands of a serial killer. What ties all the murders together? Garret must find out quick before the issue is drowned out by a young orderly's getting swept into racial tensions that erupt in the low-income communities around the hospital and a series of domestic crimes in the neighborhood. What seems at first like an ironic romp of a detective novel will remain so but it builds from that level and manages to present truly inspired slices of American life that evolves into a Royal Flush of a novel whose cards James D. Beeson lays down one by suspenseful one to the delight of all detective thriller fans.
