BWW Previews: Movie Deal for New Release WHAT IF IT'S US by Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera
Yesterday marked the highly-buzzed about launch of WHAT IF IT'S US by Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera. Albertalli's best selling novel SIMON VS. THE HOMO SAPIENS AGENDA was recently turned into the movie Love, Simon and Silvera has published acclaimed novels such as THEY BOTH DIE AT THE END and MORE HAPPY THAN NOT.
This is the first time the authors have collaborated on a novel, and social media has been ablaze with fans eager to pick it up this week.
Last week, Variety broke news about a movie deal for the book. Playwright Brian Yorkey, the creator of the hit Netflix series 13 Reasons Why (Also adapted from a best selling YA novel of the same name by Jay Asher) will helm the adaptation. The novel's authors, Albertalli and Silvera, will be two of the film's producers.
Anonymous Content, which has created films such as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Winter's Bone, and Spotlight, as well as TV series such as The OA, 13 Reasons Why, The Alienist, and Maniac, will produce the film.
Producer Joy Gorman Wheels told Variety, "'What If It's Us' is a sparkling romantic comedy, a love letter to New York City in the summer, and a moving, deeply honest look at what it's like to be a young person today," Yorkey said in a statement. "It's all the things I love, and I couldn't be more thrilled to be a part of bringing it to the screen."
At the moment, the movie is aiming for the big screen, but with Anonymous Content having such a close working relationship with Netflix and Netflix's recent successful adaptations of YA novels such as 13 Reasons Why, To All the Boys I've Loved Before, The Kissing Booth, and the upcoming Dumplin', it wouldn't be surprising to see a direct-to-Netflix movie announcement, either. As more details emerge, BroadwayWorld will keep you covered!
ABOUT WHAT IF IT'S US, out now from HarperTeen:
Arthur is only in New York for the summer, but if Broadway has taught him anything, it's that the universe can deliver a showstopping romance when you least expect it.
Ben thinks the universe needs to mind its business. If the universe had his back, he wouldn't be on his way to the post office carrying a box of his ex-boyfriend's things.
But when Arthur and Ben meet-cute at the post office, what exactly does the universe have in store for them?
Maybe nothing. After all, they get separated.
Maybe everything. After all, they get reunited.
But what if they can't quite nail a first date . . . or a second first date . . . or a third?
What if Arthur tries too hard to make it work . . . and Ben doesn't try hard enough?
What if life really isn't like a Broadway play?
But what if it is?
