Abarukas to Premiere BERNADAC at GK Arts Center

By:

ABARUKAS, a young and vital contemporary Dance Company under the direction of Yoshito Sakuraba, will dance the world premiere of Sakuraba's "Bernadac," joined by repertory works "The Master" (2014) and "No Man is an Island" (2016), dances that explore the theme of fatality, set to music by Massive Attack, Terrorfikt, and Frank Bretscheneider. Three performances, October 28 & 29, at the Gelsey Kirkland Arts Center, 29 Jay Street in Brooklyn.

Choreographer Sakuraba is a storyteller whose inspired works deal mostly with human feelings and experiences. For his new "Bernadac," the choreography is informed by a woman's repetitive journey to her fatality. The expressive and athletic company of dancers boast credits that include Hubbard Street Dance, Parsons, Gallim, Bejart Ballet Lausanne, and more.

More About Yoshito Sakuraba and Abarukas:
Sakuraba left his native Japan to move to New York at age 19, and started studying dance a year later. He received his BA in Dance from Manhattanville College as a scholarship student, continued studies at the Martha Graham School, and founded Abarukas in 2012. He won the Pretty Creative International Dance Competition in 2015 at Northwest Dance project in Oregon and created two original works with 40 selected dancers over the summer of 2015. Earlier this year, he was commissioned to create a work from Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning, followed by a residency at Kaatsbaan. His work has been shown at Jacob's Pillow Inside/Out Series in 2014 and 2016, the Booking Dance Festival at Jazz at Lincoln Center, ReverbDance Festival, LaMaMa E.T.C. Dance Festival, and more. He has also choreographed for plays and short films worldwide. Abarukas continues to display bold athleticism juxtaposed with subtle storytelling.
