Ballet Theatre Of Maryland Returns To Baltimore For Its 40th Anniversary Season Programming

Ballet Theatre of Maryland (BTM) is returning to Baltimore this November and next spring with six performances as part of its 40th Anniversary Season programming. The Annapolis-based company made its debut in Charm City 15 years ago, and since then, has performed more than two dozen productions at Artscape, the Baltimore Theater Project, the Baltimore Museum of Art, and the Modell Lyric.

"The Baltimore audience really seems to appreciate our ballets, so it was only natural to incorporate them into our 40th anniversary celebrations," says Artistic Director Dianna Cuatto. "In fact, we are performing the highly anticipated world premiere of Snow White at the Gordon Center in February. Our goal for these performances is to show the diversity of ballet."

On Saturday, November 3, BTM will present blues-inspired duets from 3 x 3 x Thirdstream for Dance Baltimore's 15th Anniversary showcase at Morgan State University. Set against the figurative backdrop of a smoky café bar, the abstract routines portray the emotionally evocative relationships between three different couples. The score features a blend of jazz and classical music.

Dance Baltimore's 15th showcase takes place on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at 7:30 p.m. at the Carl J. Murphy Fine Arts Center - 2201 Argonne Drive, Baltimore, MD 21251. General admission costs $20; student (with valid ID) and senior (60+) tickets cost $10. Tickets are available for purchase in person at the Murphy Fine Arts Center Ticket Office or by phone through Ticketmaster at (800) 551-SEAT.

The following week, BTM merges classical and contemporary choreographic works for one-hour productions of Edges and Dimensions of Dance at Charm City Fringe. Hypnotic Flamenco rhythms will draw audiences into "Danse Boheme" and "Habanera" from An American Southwest Carmen. Local composer Ryan Lucas' minimalist guitar score for Convergence allows for a quieter, more intimate moment to reflect on how our paths continue to intersect synchronously before diverging. The final piece, Shades of Blue, is neoromantic and explores "Trust," "Devotion," "Loss," "Tranquility," and "Communion" through the guise of relationships. Performances are Thursday, November 8, 2018 at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, November 10, 2018 at 4:00 p.m. and 9:15 p.m.; and Sunday, November 11, 2018 at 2:15 p.m. at the Downtown Cultural Art Center - 401 N Howard St., Baltimore MD 21201. Tickets cost $10 per performance for those who have already purchased a "button" for general entry to the festival. Or, guests can purchase a $15 ticket that includes one performance and a festival entry "button." Tickets are available at www.charmcityfringe.ticketleap.com/edges-and-dimensions-of-dance.

This spring, Snow White makes its world premiere in Baltimore County as BTM's audience choice production. Cuatto created this brand-new retelling of the famous Brothers Grimm fairytale for Ballet Theatre of Maryland's 40th Anniversary. Complete with a magical mirror, poisoned apple, wicked queen and stepmother, seven dwarfs, a prince, and more, this ballet is a fresh take on the beloved tale with some unexpected twists and turns before the happily ever after. Snow White makes its national debut at the Gordon Center for Performing Arts in Owings Mills, Maryland on February 3, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. Tickets are available at www.jcc.org/gordon-center/event/snow-white. Maryland Hall performances are Friday, February 22, 2019 at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, February 23, 2019 at 7:00 p.m.; and Sunday, February 24, 2019 at 2:00 p.m.
