Student Blog: Maria Routel-Ferguson

Maria is a first year B.F.A lighting design student at Mason Gross School of the Arts. She started doing theater when she moved to Florida, and has fallen in love with it ever since. Her love for theater stems from its prescence, becoming a craft and a conversation. She believes theater is an evolving dialogue between artists, audiences, and times, creating a unique shared experience and fostering a community. She hopes she can encourage more people to support theater, and further view it as a conversation and a performance, creating a larger theater community.

Self-doubt, burnout, and impostor syndrome snuck back into my dorm with me my second semester of theater school. This is how I’ve learned to navigate creative burnout with honesty and self-compassion. Caring deeply isn’t a weakness — it’s the reason I’m here.
