Museum of the Moving Image to Open Redesigned Building 1/15July 8, 2010Astoria's Museum of the Moving Image will open its redesigned building on January 15, 2011, the New York Times reports. The redesigned museum, designed by Thomas Leeser, will feature a glass entrance, a grand staircase, and a video wall in the lobby, as well as a new theater (seating 264) and screening room (seating 68). Museum director Rochelle Slovin told the Times, 'I had always felt that a museum about the movies should have some sense of glamour. That is part of what we've now gotten from this project.' The museum's new design also includes three additional stories, increasing the building's square footage from 50,000 square feet to 97,700 square feet.
Dance New Amsterdam Faces EvictionJuly 8, 2010Manhattan dance space organization Dance New Amsterdam may be evicted because of its inability to pay rent, the New York Times reports. Dance New Amsterdam's executive director, Catherine Peila, told the Times that Dance New Amsterdam owes over half a million dollars in rent and added, 'With the high rent and the recession, we didn't earn enough money to pay the rent. The arts community should really be revved up: we serve 8,000 students, we employ 250 people a year and we moved to Lower Manhattan to revitalize the area.' Peila also told the Times that the organization hopes to meet with landlord Fram Realty and with cities agencies and to come to an agreement for lower rent.
