By:

Expressions Dance Company's (EDC's) Helpmann and Australian Dance Award winning production, where the heart is returns to The Playhouse, Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) for a strictly limited season from the 10 to 18 August 2012.

As the first full-length piece created by Natalie Weir for EDC after she took over the position of Artistic Director for the company in 2009, where the heart is went on to win Helpmann Awards for 'Best Ballet or Dance Work' and 'Best Choreography in a Dance or Physical Theatre Work' and an Australian Dance Award for 'Most Outstanding Performance by a Company'.

Featuring an original score by John Rodgers with lyrics inspired by Queensland Author David Malouf's12 Edmondstone Street, this breathtaking dance work takes the audience on a journey into the past, as a young man returns to his childhood home and rediscovers the memories he has long forgotten.

The 2012 season of the award-winning where the heart is will be performed by EDC's Elise May, Riannon McLean and Samantha Mitchell, along with two of the male roles being played by new company members David Williams and Jack Ziesing.

Award-winning ex-West Australian Ballet member Daryl Brandwood joins EDC in July and will take on the role of 'The Father'.

The company is joined on stage by Pearly Black (vocals), Christa Powell (violin) and Marc Hannaford (piano) who play live on stage and take on characters with in the story.

Artistic Director for EDC Natalie Weir believes where the heart is has been highly regarded nationwide for its ability to connect with audiences through raw, emotional, storytelling.

"The choreography and original score allow the dancers to tap into emotions that we all, at one point or another, have had to face in our lives. Emotions such as love, loss, hurt and grief culminate to create a very evocative piece of dance theatre that people can relate to" said Weir.

The exquisite choreography, emotionally resonant live music, stunning design and strong storytelling are just a few of the elements that make where the heart is a must see in 2012.
