Fortyfivedownstairs presents a lineup of exhibits, readings, music, and other performances to finish off a succesful year.  They are:

Gallery: Essence
Aloma Treister
Until Saturday 4 December

This is an exquisite and serene exhibition, a reflection on cycles of renewal and change. The delicate and intricate images have been created by burning small holes into rice paper with incense sticks, almost a form of meditation in itself.

This use of incense as a drawing medium is incredibly time-consuming. The process, however, is a contemplative one that allows the artist to consider her life and her surroundings. Burning the rice paper leaves charred edges around every shape; creating emptiness where there once was substance. But the final impression is not one of emptiness, but of hope, of inspiration and regeneration.

Gallery: Apophenia
RMIT Textiles Exhibition 2010
Until Saturday 4 December

Said to be a symptom of creativity and madness, Apophenia is the spontaneous perception of pattern.

And pattern is among the many elements that this group of emerging artists from RMIT BA textile design explore. Their work ranges through traditional techniques, such as knit, weave, and other constructed methods as well as printing, illustration and digital media.

When you make the journey down the stairs, you will enter a world where the white space is transformed. You may also be involved in an illustration which will grow across the gallery walls throughout the week, and it is an opportunity to see some exciting new design.
