Playwright Steven Soderbergh's newest play, TOT MOM, surrounding the disappearance and subsequent murder of Florida toddler Caylee Anthony, set to begin previews at the Sydney Theatre Company on December 18, has received considerable backlash from the public who have been uneasy about dramatizing such a controversial subject matter. Today, the shows producers, including Sydney Theatre Company Artistic Director Cate Blanchett are pushing back, defending both the project and Soderbergh.

In an official statement the producers say: "Our interest in presenting the work has nothing to do with making money. This production is a one-off and will be only be seen in its Sydney season."  In fact, Soderbergh will even be donating his own fee to the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children.

TOT MOM surrounds the murder of the toddler Caylee Anthony, after she disappeared from her mothers home in 2008. Her, Casey, mother was formally charged with the murder and has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Sydney Theatre Company presents TOT MOM, created by Steven Soderbergh from December 18 to January 31. Opening night is December 23 at 8pm, Wharf 1, Sydney Theatre Company, Pier 4, Hickson Road, Walsh Bay.
