The modern theatre classic, The Crucible by Arthur Miller, with an exceptional cast including Peter Carroll, Lynette Carroll, Marta Dusseldorp and Sean O’Shea will play at Sydney Theatre Company’s Wharf 2 from 1 to 30 May 2009, opening 4 May.  Directed by emerging director Tanya Goldberg, the production is part of Sydney Theatre Company’s extensive 2009 Education Program (STC Ed), with evening performances open to both school groups and the general public. Tickets cost $30 adults / $20 concessions.

Written in the 1950’s as a response to the ‘House Un-American Activities Committee’ hearings, Arthur Miller based The Crucible on the persecution and execution of the ‘witches’ of Salem in 1692.

The play opens as Reverend Parris weeps at his ailing daughter’s bedside. His fear is that she has been possessed by a dark magic and that the same force is tightening its grip on others in Salem. As suspicion spreads, the deeply pious village descends into a religious and moral hysteria as it attempts to define the beliefs at the community’s very foundation.

Director Tanya Goldberg, whose most recent work with Sydney Theatre Company was as Assistant Director on The War of the Roses, will realise Miller’s masterpiece with a bold, contemporary production, exposing the unnerving immediacy of the timeless work.

Sydney Theatre Company’s Education Program reaches up to 30,000 young people annually, with four major productions, a range of workshops, professional development opportunities for teachers and a range of other activities including The Young Playwrights’ Residency.
