An abandoned, never-before-seen level of one of Melbourne's most-loved bars, The Carlton, will be transformed into a walk-through labyrinth of music and design during Melbourne Music Week from today 14 - Sunday 23 November, 2014. Dubbed Swell, the event reimagines how we attend music gigs with each room boasting a different design aesthetic and music genre.

A collaboration between creative director Janenne Willis, New York-based architect Brooks Atwood, and music curator Edd Fisher, Swell breaks down the boundaries between performer and audience, and invites punters into a fantasia of avant-garde rooms that they can explore (and listen to) at their leisure.

With rooms transformed into everything from a bedroom-like haven featuring tranquil guitar strains, to a shrink-wrapped, plastic-coated rave room, audiences will get up-close-and-personal with musicians in these surreal and intimate 'band rooms'.

"There's an appetite for discovery in the Australian music scene," said creator and director Janenne Willis. "People buy tickets out of curiosity. In the arts in Australia alone, hundreds of thousands are flocking to experience the new at Next Wave, DARK MOFO, Melbourne Now, Underbelly Arts and beyond.

"Now is the time for a fresh take on the live music experience," she said.

Swell features a top-secret revolving door of music acts throughout its season during Melbourne Music Week, especially curated by Edd Fisher to complement (or challenge) the architectural and spatial design by Brooks Atwood.

"The format of Swell is not the traditional headliner and support acts," said Willis. "We want to keep music-goers curious, but we can reveal that the line-up will be a surprising and astounding mix of genres, including contemporary improvised jazz, cutting edge beatmakers, dreamy soundscapes, vocal harmonies and more!"

Fundraiser tickets for Swell, which will contributed to the costs of producing the event, can be purchased through their Indie Gogo fundraising campaign, which will be active throughout Melbourne Music Week.
