ArtsEmerson has released first look footage of THE SECRET SHARER, DNAWORKS' bold world premiere adaptation of Joseph Conrad's 1909 novella, now playing through May 3, 2026 at the Jackie Liebergott Black Box Theatre at Emerson Paramount Center.

Directed by Daniel Banks, the production transforms Conrad's text into a powerful multimedia performance blending dance, music, sound, text, and art installation. Often considered an early queer text, the story follows a ship's Captain and a stowaway accused of murder, and the intimate, healing bond they develop as the stowaway is secretly sheltered in the Captain's quarters. In keeping with DNAWORKS's signature storycircle practice, audience members create the ship's perimeter and are invited to share their own stories throughout the performance, co-creating the environment alongside the artists.

The production features performers Alvon Reed, Kenneth Norris, Kwesi Johnson, and Daniel Banks, with Antonio David Lyons also among the performers. Co-creators include Alvon Reed, Adam W. McKinney, and Kwesi Johnson as co-choreographers, and Kenneth Norris as composer. The production team includes Marika Kent (lighting design), Lia Wallfish and Mel Ng (co-costume design), Yu-Hsuan Chen and Ant Ma (co-scenic design), and Ray Archie (co-sound design and sound engineering).

THE SECRET SHARER runs 80 minutes and is recommended for audiences 11 and up. Audio-described and ASL-interpreted performances take place April 30 and May 3. For tickets and information, visit ArtsEmerson online or call 617-824-8400.
