Vigor, danger and attitude infuse every act in the U.S. premiere of URBAN, a circus featuring 15 performers who share their experiences of barrio life through feats of strength, aerial stunts, acrobatics and more. URBAN, which kicks off the New Victory 2012-13 Season, will run at The New Victory Theater, 209 West 42nd Street, from October 12 through 21.

An original commission for CircusFest 2010 at London’s Roundhouse, URBAN is a freestyle portrait of a society where dance and music are the safety valves of everyday life. Weaving a tapestry of personal stories, a true narrative of the streets of Cali, Colombia, URBAN is based on the lives of the young cast; telling the world what it’s like in their reality, through their eyes, in their voices. Live reggaeton, an urban form of music that has its roots in Latin and Caribbean rhythms, underscores lyrics like escribe con los pies, poeta de la calle—write with your feet, poet of the street— in this 2010 Brighton Fringe Festival Audience Choice Award winner.

Directed by Circolombia’s artistic director and creative producer, Felicity Simpson, the cast is lead by company captain and artistic tutor, José Henry Caycedo Casierra, and features Wilmar Carabali, Ángel Caycedo Casierra, José Germán Ceballos Cruz, Cristian Camilo Dajome, Estiven Quinones Gonzalez, Francisco Javier Hurtado Hurtado, Diana Valentina Romero Londoño, Humberto Leonardo Palacios Mosquera, Jonathan Mauricio Bonilla Muñoz, Joinner Alberto Barreiro Murillo, Yeferson Murillo Palacios, Andrés Felipe Romero Pineda, Maritza Constanza Melo Zambrano and Johann Alemberg Gil Zapata.

Music direction is by Ryan Wilmott and movement is by Katie Pearson with additional choreography by Carlos Neto. Lighting is by James Loudon with AV design by David Bernard, and costumes are by Rhiannon Matthews, with the exception of the banquina costumes and makeup which are attributed to Carola Montoya.

Originally founded to place graduates from Circo Para Todos (Circus For All), the world’s first professional circus school for disadvantaged youth, onto the professional circus circuit, Circolombia has supplied shows for Butlins in the UK and Marineland in France and provides artists for Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® in the USA and P&O cruises, amongst others. Having fulfilled the company’s initial aim, Circolombia started creating its own productions in 2010, bringing a vital new style of circus onto the world’s stage.

URBAN is recommended for everyone 8 and older.
