The Ailey Extension announces its first annual "Spirt of Carnaval" workshop celebrating Brazilian dance and culture on Sunday, February 7, 2010 at The Ailey Studios located at The Joan Weill Center for Dance (405 West 55th Street at 9th Avenue).
The day-long workshop beginning at 12:30pm features three classes: Samba Drumming with Nick Birmelin, Samba in Platform Heels, and Samba Reggae/Samba DaBahia with Quenia Ribeiro, where participants will explore the different styles of dance and rhythms of Brasilian Carnaval, from Rio de Janeiro to Salvador, Bahia.In addition to this unique workshop, The Ailey Extension schedule offers Real Classes for Real People and a rare opportunity to step into another part of the world when they walk into class. Ailey Extension participants immerse themselves in the cultures of: Senagal (West African dance and Sabar), Brazil (Samba and Capoeira), Cuba, (Afro Cuban), Central Africa (Central African/Congolese Dance), Guinea (Guinean Dance), Haiti (Haitian Folkloric), and India (Masala Bhangra Workout), getting an invigorating workout while getting a taste of the language, history, and dance styles specific to the country and culture.Open to the general public, The Ailey Extension features dance and fitness classes in a wide variety of techniques for all levels, including Horton, West African, Ballet, Hip Hop and Jazz, underscoring Mr. Ailey's life-long commitment of bringing dance to everyone. The Ailey Extension was launched in April 2005 in conjunction with the opening of the Joan Weill Center for Dance (405 West 55th Street at 9th Avenue), Ailey's permanent home and the nation's largest building dedicated to dance. Since its inception, over 33,000 people have taken classes through this program
