Sephardic OTHELLO to Open in June at Center for Jewish History
A Sephardic-themed production of William Shakespeare's OTHELLO will debut June 16 to 30 at the Center for Jewish History (15 W. 16 St.), it has been announced by The American Sephardi Federation, the presenting organization. Unique to the production will be traditional Jewish Moroccan songs performed by the cast.
OTHELLO caps a 3-production series of Sephardic-infused works at the Center this winter and fall: previously productions included MERCHANT OF VENICE and the opera NABUCCO.
In OTHELLO - set in Venice, where Othello, a Moor and a venerated General, marries Desdemona, the daughter of a senator. After promoting young Cassio in the ranks, Othello's closest aide Iago becomes consumed by jealousy and plots to discredit Cassio and Desdemona, thus bringing Othello's life and career to a tragic end.
OTHELLO director David Serero, himself of Moroccan Jewish heritage, is excited to return Shakespeare's celebrated classic about jealousy, deceit and murder back to its Moroccan origins with this production.
The cast of OTHELLO includes David Serero as Othello, Christopher Romero Wilson, Shawn Chang, Elena Barone, Ian Cooper, Amanda Vilanova and Aaron Hernandez.
OTHELLO will perform, as follows:
June 16 at 8 pm; June 23 at 8 pm (opening night); June 26 at 8 pm; June 28 at 8 pm; and June 30 at 4 pm.
