Savion Glover, the 1996 Tony Award-winner for his choreography in the
Broadway hit Bring in da Noise, Bring in da Funk, will kick off the
national tour of his show, Classical Savion, at the Music Center at
Strathmore in Besthesda, MD on Thursday, October 13 and Friday, October 14, 2005 at 8
p.m. His appearance is part of Dance In To Strathmore, a two-week
celebration of dance at Strathmore.
Classical Savion, a two-hour
solo performance without intermission, "displays the strength and power
of one of todays great dance virtuosos," according to a press statement. With the unconventional
approach of tapping to classical music, Glover pays tribute to his
mentor Gregory Hines with Bachs Air from Suite No. 3 in D Major,
explores the Latin influences of Piazzolla and delves into the Romanian
Folk Dance by Béla Bartók. Other selections include Vivaldis Four
Seasons and the first movement of Bachs Brandenburg Concerto No. 3. He will be performing with the band, the Otherz and over ten classical musicians.
Glover
is the recipient of the 1996 Drama Desk Award, the Outer Critics Circle
Award, two Obie Awards and two Fred Astaire Awards for his choreography
and performance in Bring in da Noise, Bring in da Funk as well as the
1996 Dance Magazine Choreographer of the Year Award. He made his
Broadway debut at the age of 12, starring in The Tap Dance Kid.
Additional Broadway credits include Black and Blue and Jelly's Last
Jam, co-starring Gregory Hines. He is the star of Spike Lees feature
film, Bamboozled and Showtime's The Wall. Glover also appeared in Kenny
G's video "Havana," and in Puff Daddy and the Family's video "All About
the Benjamins." He previously appeared at the Strathmore in April 2005, and sold out two performances of his show Improvography.
Tickets for Classical Savion are $ 20-45. Please call (301) 581-5100 or visit www.strathmore.org for tickets.
