STAGE TUBE: Michelle Obama Visits LATE SHOW W/ DAVID LETTERMAN

First Lady Michelle Obama sat down with David Letterman during her first interview on the LATE SHOW with DAVID LETTERMAN, last night, March 19.

Mrs. Obama was greeted with a standing ovation by the audience in the Ed Sullivan Theater as she walked out on stage. "How are things at the White House? Okay?" Letterman asked. "Things are good, things are good," said Mrs. Obama. "Trying to stay out of trouble." "There's trouble everywhere in politics," Letterman said. "...You have to be careful what you say, what you do, where you go, who you look at. Now, you don't have to answer this question, but this is the thing that I was thinking about. I have conversation with my wife. Paul has conversations with his wife. Married men and women have conversations all the time." "We tend to talk," Mrs. Obama joked. "...Hypothetically speaking, at the end of the day," Letterman said, "has your husband ever come home and said to you, ‘Oh, that John Boehner, what an idiot.'" Mrs. Obama laughed and said, "It has never happened, never, never. He is always upbeat, particularly about Congress." "Yeah...How can you not be upbeat?" Letterman laughed.

Mrs. Obama also talked about her family and the lessons they have taught her. "My father had multiple sclerosis," she said, "and I never knew him to be able to walk, but my dad worked so hard and he loved us so much, and I think from him I learned just absolute, complete unconditional love, the notion that kids really don't need anything but to know that their parents adore them. And I think that's the greatest gift they gave us, just their constant support and, you know, stability, and that's really what we try to instill in our girls. I mean, you talk about raising kids, it's just really - you know, we had rules, we had boundaries, but there wasn't anything my dad wouldn't do for us, and, uh - don't make me cry. This isn't ‘Oprah!' It's supposed to be ‘Letterman.' What's up? Where are the laughs?" Mrs. Obama continued, laughing along with the audience. "Did somebody tell you this was ‘Oprah?' Letterman joked "...Is that why you're here? Oh my, someone misled the First Lady," as the audience and Mrs. Obama continued laughing. During her LATE SHOW visit, the First Lady also discussed her Joining Forces initiative and her plans for its upcoming one year anniversary in April. As First Lady, Mrs. Obama and Dr. Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, launched Joining Forces, a national initiative to recognize, honor and support military families. The initiative aims to educate, challenge and spark action from all sectors of society to ensure that military families have the support they have earned.
