REPLICA Get Featured In NYC At The New Museum Thru 12/18
Innovative collaborations are still vitally alive. Take for example "REPLICA," created by Jonah Bokaer (choreographer/media artist), Daniel Arsham (visual artist) and Judith Sánchez Ruíz (choreographer/dancer), which after performances in Valencia, Nîmes and Washington, D.C. receives its New York City premiere at the New Museum, December 10, 11, 17 and 18 at 7pm.
A unique convergence of art and science, "REPLICA" explores movement, memory and amnesia through the use of E.M.D.R. (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) testing technologies. Arsham's set design, comprised of wall erosions and sculpted cavities that symbolize memory loss, also serves as a projection surface to present previously shot footage of the performers. By watching the dancers on the recorded video while simultaneously witnessing them as they interact with Arsham's décor in real time, the audience experiences a conflation of real and fictional time and space.
The commissioned score is by ARP, the musical name of the pioneering Greek composer Alexis Georgopoulos. "REPLICA" was commissioned by the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C., marking the Academy's first choreographic commission.
The work received its world premiere at the Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno in Valencia, Spain on May 28 as part of the exhibition FRONTERAS, curated by Aaron Betsky, Francesca Pietropaolo, Robert Storr and Robert Wilson. This was followed by an American premiere on July 1 at the Harman Center in Washington, D.C. and a performance at Le Carré d'Art in Nîmes on October 12.
The two-week engagement at the New Museum will feature a series of artistic, intellectual and educational events designed to deepen and expand upon the ideas provoked by "REPLICA." Among the highlights are the publication of a program brochure that includes a 1,000 word essay on "REPLICA" by neuroaesthetician Dr. Michael Maizels; a panel discussion on Neuroscience, Memory and the Performing Arts moderated by J.D. Talasek, Director of Cultural Programs at the National Academy of Science (December 11); and a two-day workshop in improvisation conducted by Judith Sánchez Ruíz (December 16 & 17). Arsham is also designing a limited edition poster celebrating the show.
The curtain for "REPLICA" on December 10, 11, 17 and 18 is at 7pm. Tickets are $18 for the general public and $15 for New Museum members and can be purchased in advance online at http://www.newmuseum.org/events or at the New Museum admissions desk.
