Prime Stage Theatre To Celebrate 30th Season With American Themed Plays

Prime Stage Theatre will celebrate its 30th season with three classic plays speaking to the American experience past, present and future.

Prime Stage Theatre has produced 111 plays and 20 world premieres since its 1996 founding with the mission of "bringing literature to life". The company has won national recognition as a leader in educational theatre and received two National Endowment for the Arts grants for recent productions Perseverance and Speak.

Prime Stage Theatre founder/artistic director Dr. Wayne Brinda says the 30-year milestone provides opportunity to reflect on how the company's current offerings continue to embody the original mission.

"Every one of our productions, including our Monday Night Specials showcasing local performers and playwrights, invites audiences to participate in a compelling and immersive theatre experience."

Prime Stage Theatre has also made an emphatic commitment to promoting accessibility for special needs audiences. The company was the first Pittsburgh theatre company to attain Certified Sensory Inclusive status through KultureCity, the nation's leading nonprofit on sensory accessibility for those with invisible disabilities. In 2022, Prime Stage Theatre audio describer Nathan Ruggles won a national Achievement Award in Audio Description from the American Council of the Blind.

The theatre offers student matinee performances for each play, as well as an array of teacher workshops demonstrating how theatre enhances literacy and classroom learning.

The season schedule is as follows:

Fahrenheit 451

Nov. 6-15, 2026
Written by Ray Bradbury, directed by Art Deconciliis

Seven decades years after the initial publication of sci-fi thriller Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury's disturbing yet ultimately hopeful tale of a future bookless society has grown even more relevant in our time.

Wade in the Water

Feb. 19-28, 2027
Written by Lynne Conner, directed by Linda Haston

Set in 1851 Pittsburgh, historical playwright Lynne Conner's Wade in the Water dramatizes the journey of a Black family on their way to Canada to escape Southern slavery.

You Can't Take It with You

Apr. 30-May 9, 2027
Written by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, directed by Wayne Brinda

Premiering on Broadway in 1936, You Can't Take It with You by Moss Hart and Pittsburgh-born George S. Kaufman raised theatre comedy to zany new heights. "It's about a slightly mad family," Kaufman wrote. "But it has a point, that the way to live and be happy is just to go ahead and live, and not pay attention to the world."

All plays are presented at New Hazlett Theater, 6 Allegheny Square East, on Pittsburgh's Northside. Tickets and further show information can be found at Prime Stage's website.
