Ntozake Shange's FOR COLORED GIRLS Comes to Open Stage Of Harrisburg Image

Through movement, song, poetry and spoken word, Ntozake Shange's award-winning play, For Colored Girls Who have Considered Suicide/ When the Rainbow is Enuf, changed the landscape of modern theatre. Seven women of color tell stories of struggle, abandonment, pain, self-discovery, and sisterhood.

Open Stage of Harrisburg will be partnering with Sankofa African American Theatre Company to produce For Colored Girls.... This performance follows last season's premier production of Akeelah and the Bee. Sankofa's mission statement: "Sankofa African American Theatre Company exists to engage and enrich the Harrisburg region around the African American perspective on relevant issues through thought-provoking theatre that reflects artistic excellence,"and that mission could not be more pertinent than Shange's For Colored Girls... as this piece of theatre is considered one of the most groundbreaking pieces in the history of African American theatre, and the theatre world at large.

Ntozake Shange, author of For Colored Girls, passed away earlier this year on October 27th, 2018 at 70 years old. Shange was just 27 when her choreopoem was performed on Broadway, and was a prolific and varied writer who published plays, novels, poetry collections, essays and children's books.

As the second show in the subscriber season, For Colored Girls... embodies the theme of the season: "Coming of Age" by giving a voice to the underrepresented African American female community.

The variety of poems covers the civil rights issues that were occurring within Shange's lifetime, and are still prevalent and pertinent in today's world.

For Colored Girls... is performed on evenings at 7:30pm on January 19, 23, 24, 25, 26 and matinees at 2:00pm: January 20 & 27.
