Northern Stage Announces Off-Broadway Transfer & World Premiere Launch

Northern Stage cultivated this piece in the 2014 and 2017 New Works Now new play festivals. Bob Stevens (The Wonder Years, Murphy Brown, Malcolm in the Middle) brings to life a little-known night when John and Paul were becoming the most famous young men on earth. Stranded in a hotel room in Key West, they find inspiration for the music that changed our lives. Christopher Sears (John Lennon) and Tommy Crawford?? (Paul McCartney) return to Northern Stage after appearing in the 2017 staged reading of the play. Sears has appeared Off-Broadway at The Public, The Pearl, The Mint Theater, and the Apothecary Theatre Company. His film and television credits include Simple Little Lives, The Wisdom Tooth, Royal Pains, The Michael J. Fox Show, and Law & Order: SVU. Crawford's regional credits include appearances at The Women's Project, White Heron Theater, Florida Studio Theatre, Ensemble Studio Theater, The Flea, Invisible Dog, and The Lark. Christopher Flockton makes his Northern Stage main stage debut as the Road Manager. His film and television credits include The Boondock Saints, Law & Order SVU, and Guiding Light. Area student Olivia Swayze returns to play Shirley Knapp after playing the role in the 2017 staged reading and appearing in Northern Stage's Our Town and A Christmas Carol. Producing Artistic Director Carol Dunne directs the play and says of the piece, "Bob Stevens has written a valentine to John Lennon and Paul McCartney. He opens the door for all of us to get to know the young boys behind the music. The journey of the play is hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real."

The creative team includes Allison Crutchfield (costume designer), Robert Cueva (assistant lighting designer), Michael Ganio (scenic designer), Jess Johnston (production stage manager), Samantha Key (dramaturg), Dan Kotlowitz (lighting designer), and Ben Montmagny (sound designer).

A free "Spot On" conversation featuring playwright Bob Stevens will be held Sunday, February 4, 3:00 - 4:30 PM. RSVPS are requested to the Northern Stage box office for the Spot On event. Discounted tickets are available for preview performances January 31 - February 2. $15 Anytime Student tickets and $5 Access for All tickets (for EBT card holders) are available for any performance while ticket supplies last, regular adult ticket prices range from $34-$59. A complimentary post-show reception with the cast follows the opening night performance on Saturday, February 3.

Audiences may remember Trick or Treat from Northern Stage's 2017 main stage world premiere production. First seen in our New Works Now festival in 2016, the play continues its journey with a New York premiere in January 2019 as the second Off-Broadway production in Northern Stage's history.Playwright Jack Neary comments on the Off-Broadway transfer: "While I understand that any new play produced off-Broadway is, to a certain extent, at the mercy of the critics, my hope for Trick or Treat is for the New York audience to embrace the story and the superb Northern Stage cast so that the play will have a life beyond NYC. With Carol Dunne at the helm and Gordon Clapp leading the cast, I have every confidence that the success we experienced at Northern Stage will follow us to Manhattan."
