An MTV Made coach and award-winning singer and activist, Maya Azucena, is a global artist making music that matters. She will be gracing the stage at SubCulture for the New York City venue's debut performance, simultaneously celebrating her birthday!


Playing two shows on the evening of Friday, May 3rd (7:30pm and 10:00pm), Maya Azucena will be hosting an intimate performance of songs from her new album, Cry Love, as well as assorted tracks from her previous releases. Joining her on stage at Subculture include HBO's DEF Poetry Jam's Vanessa Hidary, magical wordsmith Caits Meissner, world-traveled phenom iLLSpokinn, teen sensation Isaac "Azar" Russell, playwright Kamaria, and libation legend Manchild Black.


Maya been praised by the likes of Billboard, The Washington Post, and The Village Voice, the latter of which touted her as "armed with a powerfully compelling voice, [she] just could be the most impressive of the current hip-hop/soul/R&B diva crop". In addition to creating her own unique imprint on urban music, she has collaborated with the likes of Stephen Marley (the project received a Grammy Certificate), Roberta Flack, Marcus Miller, DJ Spinna and many more.


An advocate for women's empowerment and bringing an end to domestic violence, Maya is a voice for V-Day and wrote the theme song for their One-Billion Rising campaign titled, "Dance Revolution". She is also an active member in the TedXWomen community; has been invited by US Embassies to countries to inspire through her songs; sang at the 2013 UN Summit for Secretary General Ban Ki Moon's "Every Woman, Every Child" event; went to Tanzania in 2012 to perform concerts that support an abuse and rape crisis center; and received the prestigious Top 40 Award from The Network Journal for business acumen and community activism through music.
