Marika Hughes and The New String Quartet Will Play the Uncharted Concert

Marika Hughes has returned to her chamber music roots with a new project, The New String Quartet. Alongside Charlie Burnham (violin/voice) Marvin Sewell (guitar) and Rashaan Carter (bass), the band sets out to celebrate the sounds, the vibrations and the resonances of their acoustic, unamplified strings. Rooted in the traditions of the western classical string quartet, NSQ weaves itself thru Marika's musical heritage; from songs to tunes to impromptu sketches. With a new collection of music Marika and The New String Quartet tip their hats to love, to loss, family and to gratitude.

Marika Hughes is a native New Yorker, a cellist, singer, and a storyteller on The Moth. Hughes has worked with Whitney Houston, Lou Reed, Anthony Braxton, Stevie Wonder, David Byrne, Adele, Taylor Mac, Henry Threadgill, D'Angelo and Idina Menzel among many others. She has performed on Late Show with David Letterman and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, as well as Saturday Night Live. For the last decade, Hughes has worked with the NGO Triad Trust, taking her on repeated trips to South Africa and Haiti as a music and self-care educator. She is a master teacher for Young Arts. Hughes has self released three albums, The Simplest Thing, Afterlife Music Radio, and New York Nostalgia. She happily leads her bands Bottom Heavy and The New String Quartet. Hughes lives in the countryside of Kings County.
