Culture Project has announced that Terry Kinney (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest) will direct Speak Truth To Power: Voices from Beyond the Dark as part of this fall's IMPACT Festival. Written by Ariel Dorfman and based upon the book by Kerry Kennedy, Speak Truth To Power begin performances on October 8, 2006 and will run Sunday and Monday evenings at 8pm through December 18, 2006, at Culture Project. Much like Culture Project's production of The Exonerated, Speak Truth To Power will feature a rotating cast.

On Friday, October 6, Bill Clinton will be the guest of honor at a special premiere benefit of Speak Truth To Power for the Kennedy Center. This invite-only reading will be presented at the Chelsea Piers.

"In searing and uplifting interviews, veteran human rights defender Kerry Kennedy examines the quality of courage within women and men who are dramatically changing the course of events in their communities and countries. Imprisoned, tortured and threatened with death, they speak with eloquence on subjects to which they have devoted their lives and for which they have been willing to sacrifice," state press notes.

"The play chronicles the struggles of fifty human rights activists including Vaclav Havel, the Dalai Lama, Desmond Tutu, Elie Wiesel and more than thirty individuals who have devoted themselves to human rights, including Kailash Satyarthi, who has freed tens of thousands of victims of child labor in his native India and Juliana Dogbadzi, who liberates African girls bound for sexual slavery."

A New York City-wide arts festival focusing on human rights, social justice, and political action, IMPACT will run from September 12 October 22, 2006. The 42-day festival, with more than 80 events (theatre, film, dance, music, visual art, debate, etc.), will take place at Culture Project (45 Bleecker St.) and at venues throughout New York City. Tickets will go on sale August 25, 2006. For further information call (212) 253-7017, email katrin@cultureproject.org. or visit www.impactfestival.org.
