Jaap van Zweden To Conduct Brahms's EIN DEUTSCHES REQUIEM

Music Director Jaap van Zweden will conduct Brahms's Ein deutsches Requiem with soprano Ying Fang; baritone Matthias Goerne, The Mary and James G. Wallach Artist-in-Residence; and Concert Chorale of New York, directed by James Bagwell, Thursday, February 7, 2019, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, February 8 at 2:00 p.m.; and Saturday, February 9 at 8:00 p.m.

Jaap van Zweden has received critical acclaim for his past performances of Brahms's Ein deutsches Requiem, including with baritone Matthias Goerne in October 2016. Dallas Morning News wrote of that performance: "Van Zweden clearly has a deep affinity for the Brahms.... From the most muted pianissimo to stirring masses of choral and orchestral sound, phrases were warmly shaped." The Chicago Tribune wrote of his account in November 2016: "Thanks, we needed that. The inspired performance ... stood as a timely reminder of the power of great music to provide listeners with spiritual consolation amid earthly travail." The Philharmonic performed Ein deutsches Requiem on September 20, 2001, replacing its planned Opening Night Gala with a 9/11 Memorial Concert that was simulcast to the Lincoln Center Plaza, where the public was invited to watch the performance live.

The New York Philharmonic will offer an allotment of free tickets to young people ages 13-26 for the concert on Friday, February 8 as part of Philharmonic Free Fridays.

Artist-in-Residence Matthias Goerne will return in March 2019 for performances of John Adams's The Wound-Dresser, led by Jaap van Zweden, and chamber music with pianist Daniil Trifonov and Philharmonic musicians at 92nd Street Y. Matthias Goerne has appeared with the Philharmonic 16 times, beginning with his debut in 2006.
