The Irish Repertory Theater (132 West 22nd St.) will present Oliver Goldsmith's comedy SHE STOOPS TO CONQUER with previews beginning on Thursday May 5, 2005. Opening May 12th and running through June 26, 2005, Charlotte Moore will direct.

SHE STOOPS TO CONQUER is about Young Marlowe and Kate Hardcastle, a couple who have never met but whose parents have arranged for their marriage. Young Marlow, literally struck dumb in Kate's presence mistakes her for a barmaid and her father's house for an inn. Kate takes advantage of the misunderstanding to break down his reserve. Inept servants add to the mix-ups, and the mistakes of the night are pleasantly corrected at the final tableau.

The Irish born Oliver Goldsmith (1728-1774) is the author of such literary gems as The Deserted Village and The Vicar of Wakefield. Through the publication of The Bee and the Life of Beau Nash, Goldsmith achieved considerable popularity. His first play The Good Natur'd Man, opened in 1768

Charlotte Moore, Artistic Director of the Irish Repertory Theatre, has most recently directed ENDGAME and adapted/directed FINIAN'S RAINBOW, which was just nominated for the 2005 Lucille Lortel Award for Best Revival. The Irish Repertory Theatre was also named the recipient of the 2005 Lucille Lortel "Outstanding Body of Work" Award.

The "robust and undentable" comedy features a cast that includes Remak Ramsay, Patricia O'Connell, Tim Smallwood, Danielle Ferland, Jennifer Bryan, Tommy Schrider, Donald Grody, Brian Hutchison, and Lucas Caleb Rooney.

Scenic design is by James Morgan, Costumes by Linda Fisher, and Lighting is by Mary Jo Dondlinger.
