2026 Tony Awards Winners

The 79th Annual Tony Awards took place June 7 at Radio City Music Hall, hosted by P!nk. Among the winners: Schmigadoon! took Best Book of a Musical (Cinco Paul), Qween Jean won Best Costume Design of a Musical for Cats: The Jellicle Ball, Jeff Mahshie won Best Costume Design of a Play for Fallen Angels, Kai Harada won Best Sound Design of a Musical for Ragtime, Mikaal Sulaiman won Best Sound Design of a Play for Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman, and Doug Besterman and Mike Morris won Best Orchestrations for Schmigadoon! The most-nominated shows of the season were Schmigadoon! and The Lost Boys.

Does Winning 'Best Musical' Mean a Boost in Ticket Sales?

A BroadwayWorld data analysis by Ben Waterhouse finds that Best Musical Tony winners have averaged a 29% ticket sales increase in the six weeks following the ceremony, with a median bump of 32%. Since the pandemic, that post-Tony boost has risen to an average of 35% for the winner, up from 27% pre-pandemic; however, non-winning nominees have seen their boost shrink from 10% to just 5% over the same period. The article notes that this season none of the new musical nominees ranked in the upper half of the theoretical monthly average for Broadway grosses, making a Tony win especially consequential for their commercial survival.

Kennedy Center Orders Staff to Strip Trump's Name from Documents and Signage

Following a federal court ruling that the Kennedy Center's board acted unlawfully when it voted to rename the Washington institution after President Trump, the center's general counsel issued an internal memo directing staff to remove Trump's name from all official materials immediately. Social media accounts, email signatures, voicemail greetings, and indoor and outdoor signage — including parking signs branded "Trump Kennedy Center" — were given a firm deadline of June 12 to revert to "The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts." The renaming had originated in December when the board, filled with the president's allies, voted to honor him; Judge Christopher R. Cooper of the Federal District Court ruled the authority to rename the center — dedicated to President Kennedy in 1964 — rests solely with Congress.

Berkeley Playhouse Names Mike Lawson as Managing Director

Berkeley Playhouse has named Mike Lawson as its new Managing Director, joining Artistic Director Kimberly Dooley as the company prepares for its 20th Anniversary Season in 2027. Lawson brings more than 15 years of arts administration experience, having most recently served as Senior Manager of Company Operations at San Francisco Ballet, where he oversaw budgets, administered contracts for seven labor unions, and managed civic partnerships. Earlier in his career, Lawson served as Marketing & Audience Services Director for BroadwaySF, has been a Youth Musical Theater Adjudicator for the Jimmy Awards since 2021, and has early roots at Berkeley Playhouse itself as an Assistant Stage Manager.

Hartford Stage Surpasses $20 Million Goal for Set the Stage Campaign

Hartford Stage announced it has exceeded the $20 million fundraising goal for its Set the Stage campaign, with leadership gifts from donors including the David & Sherry Cordani Family Foundation, as well as corporate supporters such as Cigna, The Hartford, Stanley Black & Decker, and Travelers. The campaign will support Hartford Stage's artistic and educational programs and make a transformative investment in the theater's endowment; the effort continues through June 30 as the organization aims to double its total donor count, with a goal of 200 additional contributors.

Overture Center for the Arts Contributes $66.9M to Madison Economy, Report Finds

A University of Wisconsin-Whitewater economic analysis found that Overture Center for the Arts will contribute $66.9 million to Madison's economy in the 2025/26 season — a 94% increase from the post-pandemic 2021/22 season figure of $34.48 million. The center draws more than 500,000 guests annually (up 124% from 234,475 post-pandemic), supports over 400 local jobs, and generates $3.59 million in state and county tax revenue. Of the $66.9 million total, $18.9 million is spent at local restaurants, retail, and hospitality businesses, and $14 million represents total visitor impact from Broadway tours, Overture Presents shows, and nine resident arts organizations.

June 1, 2026 - Kennedy Center Ruling, Broadway's Record Season & New York's $150M Tax Credit Boost

On the legal and legislative front, a federal judge ordered the removal of President Trump's name from the Kennedy Center and temporarily blocked its planned closure, while New York State added $150 million to its theatrical production tax credit program. Broadway closed out its 2025–2026 season with a new all-time box office record of $1.91 billion, and the Broadway League and Actors' Equity announced a new audition initiative called LEAP. Leadership transitions dominate the regional news, with changes at the Wilma Theater, Playhouse on Park, Ballet West, and Gloucester Stage Company. Rounding out the week: a Broadway-themed fan convention is headed to Las Vegas, Opera Australia reported a major financial turnaround in its 2025 annual report, and Stage One opened applications for its UK producer placement scheme.

May 26, 2026 - Doomsday for the American Theater? Not in Milwaukee

This week's theater news reflects a field in flux. On the business side, ATG Entertainment is reportedly being prepared for a possible sale by its private equity owner, while Pittsburgh Public Theater terminated its staff ahead of its merger with Pittsburgh CLO — two stories that speak to the consolidation and financial pressures reshaping the industry. Against that backdrop, Milwaukee Repertory Theater stands out as a striking counterexample: the company has nearly doubled its operating budget since 2020, opened a landmark $80 million theater complex, and is expanding its season to 13 productions, fueled by a philosophy of investing in artists and audiences rather than contracting. Across the Atlantic, the UK government announced a temporary VAT cut on children's and family theater tickets this summer, even as a new report revealed West End ticket prices have fallen below 2019 levels in real terms. On the awards front, American Players Theatre in Spring Green, Wisconsin was named the recipient of the 2026 Regional Theatre Tony Award — the first Wisconsin theater to receive the honor — and the Broadway League announced its 2026 League Award recipients. With the Tony Awards just weeks away, all four Best Musical nominees and all three Best Musical Revival nominees have been confirmed to perform at the June 7 ceremony at Radio City Music Hall.

May 18, 2026 - Drama Desk winners announced & Jeff Awards halt non-Equity Adjudication

In New York, awards season rolls on: Schmigadoon! and Ragtime led the 70th Annual Drama Desk Awards, Dorian Award nominations have been announced, and John Lithgow is slated for a lifetime achievement honor. Chicago’s Jeff Awards have halted non-Equity adjudication to overhaul policies following community backlash, while the UK’s National Theatre is launching a 12-venue partnership to rescue a collapsing regional touring network. We round out the news with a wave of key executive appointments in Massachusetts, Dallas, and London, a breakdown of Australia’s complex new $1.1 billion arts budget, and the return of BroadwayWorld's My Show’s Curtain Call for the 2025-2026 season.
