Hubbard Street Dance Chicago And Third Coast Percussion Appear At Swarthmore College

By:

The William J. Cooper Foundation with the Department of Music and Dance at Swarthmore College present Hubbard Street Dance Chicago with Third Coast Percussion. The performance will be on Friday, February 8, 2019 at 8 PM in the Pearson-Hall Theatre in the Lang Performing Arts Center on the Swarthmore College campus.

Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and Grammy-award winning Chicago music sensation Third Coast Percussion, with music composition by pop music icon Devonte Hynes (Blood Orange), come together for an exciting collaboration featuring two cutting-edge choreographers Emma Portner and Teddy Forance. Portner's For All Its Fury and Forance's Everything Must Go feature Third Coast Percussion performing live alongside Hubbard Streets dancers, and center around themes of sustainability drawing inspiration from Paul Stamet's book "Mycelium Running" and Sylvia Plath's poem "Mushrooms."

Hubbard Street Dance Chicago will also present a master class on Thursday, February 7th at 2:40 PM in the Boyer Dance Studio in the Lang Performing Arts Center, and a repertory workshop will be held on February 7th at 4:30 PM also in the Boyer Dance Studio.

Third Coast Percussion will present a lecture, "Science of Sound," in the Lang Concert Hall on Wednesday, February 6th at 4:00 PM. They will also present a community performance of Terry Riley's In C with members of the Swarthmore Community. The public community performance will take place on Saturday, February 9th at 3:00 PM in the Lang Concert Hall.

HUBBARD STREET DANCE CHICAGO's core purpose is to bring artists, art and audiences together to enrich, engage, educate, transform and change lives through the experience of dance. Celebrating Season 41 in 2018-19, under the artistic leadership of Glenn Edgerton, Hubbard Street continues to innovate, supporting ascendant creative talent while presenting repertory by internationally recognized living artists. Hubbard Street has grown through the establishment of multiple platforms alongside the Lou Conte Dance Studio - now in its fifth decade of providing a wide range of public classes and pre-professional training - while extensive Youth, Education, Community, Adaptive Dance and Family Programs keep the organization deeply connected to its hometown.

THIRD COAST PERCUSSION is a Grammy Award-winning, artist-run quartet of classically-trained percussionists hailing from Chicago. For more than ten years, the ensemble has forged a unique path in the musical landscape with virtuosic, energetic performances that celebrate the extraordinary depth and breadth of musical possibilities in the world of percussion. The ensemble has been praised for "commandingly elegant" (New York Times) performances, the "rare power" (Washington Post) of their recordings, and "an inspirational sense of fun and curiosity" (Minnesota Star-Tribune). The four members of Third Coast are also accomplished teachers, and since 2013, have served as ensemble-in-residence at the University of Notre Dame's DeBartolo Performing Arts Center. Third Coast Performers: Sean Connors, Robert Dillon, Peter Martin, and David Skidmore.

The event is free and open to the public. Please visit http://www.swarthmore.edu/dance-program or http://www.swarthmore.edu/music for more information.
