Cooper Union's Great Hall, a historic platform for critical discussion of political, educational and social issues, celebrates its 150th anniversary with a special, eight-part series-GREAT EVENINGS IN THE GREAT HALL-that kicks off on Tuesday, April 21st at 6:30 p.m. at The Great Hall of The Cooper Union (7 E. 7th St, b/w 3rd and 4th Ave.).

The first performance in this series, "Abolitionism and Civil Rights," explores the social movement that divided and transformed the United States, creating a rift that, more than a century later, is still under repair. Columbia University professor Eric Foner, considered the foremost historian of our post-Civil War reconstruction era, will introduce the program.

The New York City Labor Chorus will perform songs of protest, freedom and justice. Rev. Dr. Calvin Butts of the Abyssinian Baptist Church, actors Barbara Feldon, Marina Squerciati and David Strathairn, and novelist Thulani Davis, who, as a child, witnessed her grandfather "auctioned" on the stage of The Great Hall as part of an abolitionist rally, will offer readings and reenactments from the era.

Since 1859, the Great Hall has been a preeminent stage for pioneering individuals whose views reshaped society, from Frederick Douglass and Harriet Beecher Stowe to W.E.B. DuBois. Each of the eight programs in the "Great Evenings in the Great Hall" series will focus on one area of protest, reform, or education. A distinguished historian will introduce the evening's topic, followed by New York City notables who will recreate landmark speeches and performances delivered in The Great Hall.

This event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 212.353.4195 or visit www.cooper.edu.
