EDINBURGH 2026 Review: INTO THE WOODS, Edinburgh Academy
Into the Woods runs at Edfringe until 16 August
Into the Woods brings together several classic fairy tale characters, a baker and his wife, Cinderella, Jack and Little Red, whose stories collide when a witch sends the couple on a quest to break a curse. As their wishes begin to come true, it also unveils unexpected consequences.
As the audience shuffled into the Main Hall at Edinburgh Academy, the vibe was already set with warm lighting, a smokey room and bird sounds from the speakers, transporting you straight into the musical's setting.
It's safe to say that this show was packed with an incredibly talented cast who all brought a new life to their characters compared to what we know them from in other pieces of fiction. The Witch, played by Linzi Devers, captivated the audience each time she was on stage, her stunning voice, emotional facial expressions and overall stage presence was hard to take your attention off of. Additionally, Rapunzel, played by Evie McColgan, was another standout for her ability to sing such high notes with precision, and her screams of anger felt gutteral and full of rage, making you feel like the one she's after.
The production in terms of stage design was a huge takeaway. For a small venue, they were able to utilise the hall's facilities in a very creative way. Rapunzel in her tower was situated on the upper balcony with her long hair wrapped around the railing and hung down to the main stage. The circular nature of the setting make it easy for the cast to come through the crowd in some scenes, making it feel more immersive for the audience. To emmulate The Giant, they used spotlights on the other side of the upper balcony with cut outs to represent eyes, and held eyelashes over the top to blink every now and then. It was facinating to see how they transformed their stage into the woods.
Captivate Theatre put on a thrilling and whimsical rendition of Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods, full of creativity that showcases upcoming talent.
