Now in its fourth season, the Downtown Urban Theater
Festival (DUTF) will take residency at the legendary Cherry Lane Theatre (38 Commerce St.) in Greenwich
Village, June 22th to July 2nd, with two weeks of urban theater by a cross section
of urban playwrights and performing artists.
"This year's diverse
collection of works cover topics ranging from war to homelessness, love and sex
to gender identity and, geographically, from the Bronx and Queens to Manhattan.
A highlight is a new work, Murphy's
Law, by Reg E. Gaines, the Tony/Grammy-nominated writer of Bring in Da Noise Bring in Da Funk," state production notes. "It has been a
catalyst for some of New York City's most vibrant and creative
playwrights and performing artists. Some of the DUTF alumni such as Desi Moreno-Penson, Reg E. Gaines,
Mayda del Valle and Vanessa Hidary have gone on to present their work at other
theaters, as well as colleges, across the country. Since its inception, DUTF
has presented 30 original theatrical works that has attracted
more than 3,000 theatre-goers."
Two of the plays showcased in this year's DUFT are Reg E. Gaines' Murphy's Law and Desi Moreno-Penson's 3 to a Session: A Monster's Tale.
Murphy's Law "unveils a sociopolitical, critical analysis of Black America, seen
through the eyes of two Black homeless men, which takes places in Union Square Park
a day after September 11th." The play will be presented on June 29th at 7:30 PM. Gaines is the Tony/Grammy-nominated writer of Bring in Da Noise, Bring in Da
Funk, and his Other Aspects won Best Play at DUTF
2003. 3 To a Session: A Monster's Tale, which will be performed on July 1st at 7:30 PM, takes place "in a surrealistic realm between life and death as a man and a woman engage in sexual play-acting scenarios, leading them into memories of loss, love, adolescent sexual longing and domestic violence." Moreno-Penson's A Latina Prepares won Best Short at last year's DUFT.
