Debbie Allen Developing Performing Arts Drama for The CW

By:

Debbie Allen may soon be bringing a little bit of FAME to The CW.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the network has given a script order to an hour-long pilot reminiscent of FAME, from Debbie Allen and executive producer Sam Haskell. Rather than Manhattan, the project will be set in a Los Angeles performing arts school. HOUSE's Matt Witten is set to write and executive produce with the pair.

Last year, AMERICAN IDOL's Nigel Lythgoe partnered with MGM in an attempt to revitalize FAME for a new generation on the small screen. Since the announcement, nothing has come of the plans.

FAME was a 1980 film which chronicled the lives of several teenagers attending a prestigious New York high school for students gifted in the performing arts. The film was adapted to TV beginning in 1982 and ran for six years. In the series, Allen portrayed dance teacher Lydia Grant, and served as the show's principal choreographer.

In 1988, a stage adaptation opened on Broadway starring Gavin Creel. Set in New York City's legendary High School for Performing Arts, the show took audiences through the highs, the lows, the romances and the ultimate triumphs of the star-struck pupils in their quest for success.
