Chita Rivera to Perform Show in Australia, August 12-29

By: Jul. 12, 2006

Chita Rivera is taking her act on the road…to Australia.  The two-time Tony Award-winner will head down under in August for her very first appearances in that country.  Accompanied by musical director David Krane, she will perform in intimate settings at The Studio at the Sydney Opera House from August 12-19; and at the Sofitel Supper Club in Melbourne from August 26-29.

"Aussie audiences will get a rare glimpse of the Broadway legend up close and personal as she takes them on a musical journey of the songs she made famous including "America" (West Side Story); "All That Jazz" (Chicago); " Big Spender" (Sweet Charity); "Kiss of the Spider Woman" and such standards as "Carousel,"  "Our Love is Here to Stay," "Every Street's a Boulevard" and much more," state notes on the show.

Rivera has been a consistent and dynamic presence on Broadway for over half a century. She recently received a Tony Award nomination for Chita Rivera: The Dancer's Life. Rivera is a two-time Tony Award winner for The Rink and Kiss of the Spiderwoman, and also received nods for her performances in Nine (her most recent Broadway appearance), Jerry's Girls, Merlin, Bring Back Birdie, the original production of Chicago and Bye Bye, Birdie. Rivera originated the role of Anita in West Side Story, and has also been seen on Broadway in Can-Can, Mr. Wonderful, Shinbone Alley and Bajour, as well as in touring productions of Pippin and Sweet Charity, and in The Visit at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago.  Rivera is a 2002 Kennedy Center Honoree.
