A champion of contemporary opera, internationally acclaimed soprano and stage director Catherine Malfitano has sung in the world premieres of Carlisle Floyd's Bilby's Doll, Conrad Susa's Transformations, Thomas Pasatieri's Washington Square and The Seagull and William Bolcom's A View from the Bridge, McTeague, A Wedding, and Medusa. Beyond her contemporary roles, Malfitano's repertoire of more than seventy roles spans the entirety of operatic history. She has appeared at all the world's leading opera houses including the Metropolitan Opera, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Vienna State Opera, La Scala, the Bavarian State Opera, the Paris Opera, the Royal Opera Covent Garden, Berlin's Deutsche Opera and State Opera, the Salzburg Festival, Florence's Teatro Comunale, the San Francisco Opera, the Netherlands Opera, the Los Angeles Opera, the Houston Grand Opera, the Théâtre du Chatelet in Paris, the Grand Théâtre du Genève, Barcelona's Liceu, the Hamburg State Opera, and Brussels' Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie. Her Emmy-award winning portrayal of Tosca, broadcast live from the actual Roman settings of the opera, was seen by more than one billion viewers worldwide.

In the summer of 2005 Catherine Malfitano added another facet to her artistic profile with her debut as a stage director. Her critically acclaimed productions have been seen internationally, and she is highly in demand as a voice teacher and master coach.

On Tuesday May 28th at 7:00 PM, American Lyric Theater is thrilled to welcome Catherine Malfitano to open InsightALT with a master class on the unique challenges of creating new operatic roles. This interactive class will bring together singers, composers, and librettists as we explore excerpts from the three new operas currently being developed at ALT: The Long Walk by Jeremy Howard Beck and Stephanie Fleischmann; The Turing Project by Justine F. Chen and David Simpatico; and La Reina by Jorge Sosa and Laura Sosa Pedroza. Guest singers participating in the master class include soprano Rosa Betancourt, mezzo sopranos Heather Johnson and Elise Quagliata, tenor Javier Abreu, and baritones Jonathan Estabrooks and Christopher Burchett.

Following the master class, we will join together for a reception sponsored by Gotham Wines and Liquors to honor Ms. Malfitano's contribution to American Opera.

Tickets to the master class and wine reception are only $25 - but if you purchase in advance and use code PAR25, you can save 25% off the already low priced tickets!
