Brooklyn Museum's Target First Today to Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, Today
On October 3, Target First Saturday will celebrate the diversity of Hispanic and Latino communities in Brooklyn and beyond through music, performance, film and word, as inspired by Impressionism and the Caribbean: Francisco Oller and His Transatlantic World. The evening highlights include a performance by Gregorio Uribe Big Band presented in partnership with Berklee College of Music, a reading by Raquel Cepeda, poetry by Caribbean fellows from Cave Canem, and Garifuna percussionist Aurelio as a part of Carnegie Hall's Neighborhood Concert Series.
Brooklyn Museum's Target First Saturday events attract thousands of visitors to free art and entertainment programs each month. Some Target First Saturday programs have limited space and are ticketed on a first-come, first-served basis. *Denotes a ticketed event.
5 p.m. Music
Guitarist and percussionist Aurelio blends Latin and paranda styles, embracing theGarifuna tradition of his homeland of Honduras. Presented as part of Carnegie Hall's Neighborhood Concerts, a program of the Weill Music Institute.

Richard Aste, Curator of European Art, and Edward J. Sullivan, Professor of Art History at NYU, discuss the exhibition Impressionism and the Caribbean: Francisco Oller and His Transatlantic World.

Paint a still life of unexpected objects inspired by the works and life of Francisco Oller.
6:30-8:30 p.m. Pop-Up Gallery Talks
Enjoy ten-minute discussions about works of art around the Museum. Look for Museum Guides wearing orange "Pop-Up Gallery Talks" buttons.

Danza Fiesta: Baile y Teatro Puertorriqueno explores Puerto Rican Folk traditions through dance and song.
7 p.m. Music
Brooklyn-based DJ duo iBomba (DJ Beto and DJ Ushka) blend future dancehall and dembow with trini-soca, kuduro, baile funk, merengue, cumbia, and more.
7:30 p.m. Poetry Reading
Poetry collective Cave Canem presents original poems celebrating the Caribbean.
*8 p.m. Performance
Nuyorican Poets Cafe presents a lively showcase of word and music inspired by local and global Caribbean identities and experiences.
8 p.m. Social Club
San Juan-based organization Ventana Al Jazz presents Latin jazz. Create your own still life inspired by Franciso Oller's paintings and stay for a game of dominoes.
8:15 p.m. Kids Corner
Join ¡Acopladitos! for a musical immersion in Spanish and English with singing, creative movement, and music making to popular Latin American songs.
8:30 p.m. Music
Gregorio Uribe Big Band, led by singer and accordionist Gregorio Uribe, blends big-band sound with cumbia and other Colombian rhythms. Presented in partnership with Berklee College of Music.
*9 p.m. Book Club
Harlem-raised Dominican author and journalist Raquel Cepeda discusses her memoir Bird of Paradise: How I Became Latina.
