Benjamn Till's Award-winning Musical BRASS Opening At The Union Theatre

To commemorate the Centenary of Armistice Day this November, the Union Theatre will present the professional London première of Benjamin Till's award-winning musical, BRASS.

Set during the First World War, BRASS tells the story of a group of men from an amateur Leeds-based brass band who enlist to fight as part of the Leeds Pals regiment. They leave behind their wives and sweethearts who are left to pick up the pieces in the munitions factory. The women learn to play the instruments their brave men have left in the hope that one day they can play triumphantly to them on their return from war. Based on true stories, this heartfelt tale set between Leeds and the front line is one of love, survival, loss, music and the futilities of war.

BRASS is written by multi-award-winning composer and film-maker, Benjamin Till. Benjamin was commissioned by the National Youth Music Theatre to write a musical to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. The original production staged at Leeds City Varieties Music Hall won 'Best Musical' in the 2014 UK Theatre Awards.

Benjamin has worked professionally in theatre and TV for over twenty years. He has made more than fifteen musical films (largely for the BBC and Channel 4), released four albums, worked as a casting director in feature films, composed classical works for the concert platform, and written five stage musicals including Brass, Beyond The Fence and Em. He is perhaps best known as the writer/conceiver (and one of the grooms) from Channel 4's hugely successful, BAFTA-nominated Our Gay Wedding: The Musical.

Directed by the Union Theatre's Founder and Artistic Director, Sasha Regan. As a director Sasha's recent credits include: Love Story which was runner up in WestEndFrame Best Production, We're all doing Time (Critics Choice), Chelinot (Sunday Times Critics Choice), Kander & Ebb's Cabaret, Sweeney Todd (Critics Choice) and Pirates of Penzance (Winner Of The Whatsonstage, Best Off West End Production). After performing at The Prince of Wales Theatre for the WhatsonStage Awards, Pirates then transferred to Wilton's Music Hall and then moved to The Rose Theatre, Kingston. Pirates then completed a Number One tour of Australia, including a month's run at The Sydney Theatre. Iolanthe (Critics Choice & Time Out's top 10 musicals of 2010). Iolanthe transferred to Wilton's Music Hall where the cast enjoyed a sold-out run and broke all Wilton's box office records from the previous 12 years. Patience (Critics Choice). Sasha directed the European Première of Pipe Dream; the musical was nominated for both Best Production and Best Direction in the BroadwayWorld Awards.
