BGA Presents The Green Broadway Award To Donyale Werle

The Broadway Green Alliance (BGA) announces that Donyale Werle is the recipient of the 2019 Green Broadway Award for an individual. The Green Broadway Award honors an individual, show or organization for outstanding achievement in making Broadway more environmentally friendly. The first Green Broadway Award was given to Jujamcyn Theaters in 2015, the second to David Stone in 2017, and the Green Broadway Award for an organization was given to Disney Theatrical Productions earlier this year.

Donyale received the award in recognition of her work to incorporate sustainability into all of her sets to make set designing greener.

Donyale's achievements include:

  • Creating Tony Award-winning sets using mostly salvaged, found, and recycled materials.
  • Building set models out of greener materials, such as recyclable cardboard boxes, instead of unsustainable materials.
  • Co-chairing the BGA's Pre-Production Committee.
  • Being a passionate advocate and teacher for sustainable theater and leading panels at conventions, such as USITT, SETC, and BroadwayCon.
  • Being an innovator and role model for other set designers, as well as the entire theater community.
