Variety is reporting that a stage version of "American Psycho" is currently in development with the intention of heading to Broadway. Based off of a 1991 Bret Easton Ellis novel, "American Psycho" tell the story of a Wall Street banker by day who is a serial killer by night.

In 2000 Lionsgate Pictures made a film of the novel which starred Christian Bale, Josh Lucas, Chloe Sevigny, Jared Leto, Reese Witherspoon and Samantha Mathis.

The new musical will contain 80's style rock numbers in keeping with the time period in which it was written. Variety reports, "Graphically bloody novel, which juxtaposes Reagan-era decadence and gruesome killings, includes prominent references to bands of the era, a fact that contributed to the idea of musicalizing the story. Sounds of the time will influence the new show's score."

The musical will be produced by Johnson-Roessler Co., management-production company the Collective and XYZ Films.

"Now in particular it seems relevant, especially given what's happening on Wall Street," said David Johnson of Johnson-Roessler.
