2010 Otto René Castillo Awards for Political Theatre Honors Political Artists 5/23
The Castillo Theatre is holding its twelfth annual Otto René Castillo Awards for Political Theatre On Sunday, May 23 at the Castillo Theatre at 543 West 42nd Street (between 10th and 11th Avenues) in New York City at 2:00 p.m.
The 2010 honorees include: Melvin Van Peebles, director, actor, novelist and musician; Ruth Maleczech, co-founder and co-artistic director of Mabou Mines; David Diamond, artistic and managing director of the Headlines Theatre, Vancouver, Canada; Carlyle Brown, playwright and actor; the Working Classroom, Albuquerque, New Mexico; and the Black Tent Theatre, Tokyo, Japan.
The Otto Awards, named after Guatemalan poet and revolutionary Otto René Castillo, recognize the achievement of individuals and theatre companies who conceive, produce and foster the development of innovative and socially challenging theatre. The award itself is an original sculpture created by the noted Brazilian contemporary artist and designer Sheila Goloborotko. Past honorees include: Kathleen Chalfant, Ntozake Shange, Robert Wilson, LAByrinth Theater Company, Douglas Turner Ward, Laurie Anderson, the San Francisco Mime Troupe, the Steppenwolf Theater and Joseph Chaikin.
