THE PEACH SEASON by Debra Oswald
Little Theatre, Thursday to Saturday 10-12 & 17-19 March 2016, 7.30pm
“Sometimes all you can do is sit back and watch people make mistakes. The instant a person loves a person or a thing, they face the risk of losing that person or thing.”
Escaping Sydney after the violent death of her husband, Celia set about creating a safe world on her peach farm with baby daughter Zoe.
But after sixteen years of isolation her small haven is about to erupt when a brother and sister, with shadowy backgrounds, turn up looking for picking work. Now approaching adulthood, Zoe has begun to resent her mother’s protectiveness. The combination of heat and isolation, and the excitement inherent in the forbidden, is destined to trigger youthful passions and bad decisions, changing Celia’s world forever.
Winner of the 2005 Rodney Seaborn Playwright’s Award, The Peach Season is a powerful and moving story about the intoxication of first love and the burning love of a mother for a child and reflects our overwhelming desire to protect the ones we love, and the painful necessity of letting go.
“... some necessary things – like letting your child go out into the world – the beautiful, perilous world – require you to just sit. Sit with things gnawing in your belly and learn not to do anything.”
‘The virtue of Oswald’s funny and tender play is that it’s deeply caring of people, irrespective of the mess they create or get themselves into.’ Sydney Morning Herald
