UATG Theatre Guild Presents MISS JULIE and AFTER MISS JULIE Double Bill, Beginning Tonight

UATG Theatre Guild presents Miss Julie by August Strindberg, translated by Michael Meyer and After Miss Julie by Patrick Marber, by arrangement with OriginTM Theatrical on behalf of Samuel French Ltd. Directed by Geoff Brittain with Costume Design by Ben Todd, the production will run at the Little Theatre, The Cloisters, University of Adelaide.

The Theatre Guild presents two versions of the same story with the same cast!

In early 2013 when the Theatre Guild Board was deciding which plays to present in 2014, it received a proposal from director Geoff Brittain to direct After Miss Julie by Patrick Marber, a well-known playwright (Dealer's Choice, Closer, Don Juan in Soho) and screen writer (Notes on a Scandal and the soon-to-be-released Fifty Shades of Grey).

Over the ensuing months, a plan was formulated to present an exciting and new challenge for actors and audiences alike; to present not only After Miss Julie, but also the original telling of the story, Miss Julie, a much more restrained play reflecting the times in which it was set.

The challenge was then on; to find actors willing to take on two plays offering two very different interpretations of the same characters, with lines similar in both but updated to the more modern vernacular in After Miss Julie. To make it even more interesting, it was decided to offer the female actors the opportunity to swap roles so each played 'Miss Julie' and 'Christine'.

The Theatre Guild was extremely fortunate to cast Cheryl Douglas, Nick Fagan and Rosie Williams who have risen to the challenge. Director Geoff Brittain said "The challenge for us was to create two plays in the usual rehearsal time frame. Whilst the story is the same, the style, characterisation and delivery were quite different. All the actors stepped up to take on this unique experience".

The Theatre Guild is delighted to present 'Double Bill Saturday'. On Saturday 4, 11 and 18 October at 6pm (please note earlier starting time), Miss Julie will be presented followed by After Miss Julie with an interval in between the two plays. The interval will be half an hour to allow for the stage to be re-set and the actors to change costumes and hairstyles to reflect the more modern era.
