MEDIA AdYO Commemorates 119th Anniversary of Brahms' Death as Maestro Series Returns on 4/3

By:
South Australia's best and brightest young musicians will thrill audiences with a program of dramatic classical masterpieces in the return of Adelaide Youth Orchestra's flagship Maestro Series concerts on Sunday, April 3.

The first major concert of AdYO's recently launched 2016 season, Maestro Series 1: High Drama will present a bold and challenging program of works to showcase the skills of the young orchestra, widely renowned as one of the best in Australia.

The concert will include César Franck's masterpiece Symphony No 2 in D minor in its first performance by AdYO since 2002, and the elegant and lyrical Cello Concerto by Luigi Boccherini featuring rising star cellist and Helpmann Award winner David Moran.

Also on the program is Johannes Brahms' sublime and emotional Tragic Overture, the performance of which will coincide with the 119th anniversary of the composer's death on April 3, 1897.

AdYO Artistic Director and conductor Keith Crellin says the first Maestro concert will set a high bar for the rest of the 2016 season.

"This program of dramatic musical masterworks is a great challenge for a young orchestra and a wonderful musical experience for all," he says.

"The raw energy and enthusiasm that these young players bring to their music makes for a really captivating and enjoyable concert experience."

The concert also marks the start of AdYO's new, more convenient afternoon show times, with the Maestro Series performances shifting from their previous Sunday evening timeslots to 3.00pm.

As part of AdYO's initiatives to make its 2016 program even more accessible, under 30s can see all Maestro Series concerts for just $30 using the new 30-4-30 Pass, a special digital ticket that can be displayed on a smartphone or tablet for entry at the venue. These passes are available through the AdYO website: www.bit.ly/adyo30430

The flagship of Adelaide Youth Orchestras' four orchestras, AdYO comprises 80 of South Australia's most talented young musicians, conducted by Artistic Director Keith Crellin.

Hand-picked by annual audition, each AdYO member is tutored by professional musicians from the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, the SA Police Band and the Elder Conservatorium of Music at The University of Adelaide to nurture their love of orchestra music and ensure performances of the highest quality.
