After a record-breaking sell-out season in Los Angeles and an off-Broadway run that had critics raving, smash hit US comedy It's Just Sex is set for its Australian premiere in what will be The Adelaide Repertory Theatre's raciest show ever staged.

Friends Joan and Phil, Greg and Lisa and Kelly and Carl are three ordinary married couples. On the surface they look the perfect picture of monogamy, but temptations and hidden desires bubble and seethe underneath.

One night when their teenage children are away the couples come out to play, but as the drinks flow their casual get together rapidly turns into something a lot more serious. Secrets are revealed, boundaries are broken and inhibitions - and clothes - are removed, and by the end of the evening what should have been just an innocent party becomes an event that changes all three relationships forever.

Risque, raw and uncompromising, It's Just Sex is a funny and frank look at modern marriage, sex, fidelity and what couples get up to behind closed doors (and sometimes out in the open!).

Praised as "convulsively funny" by Variety and "a comic home run" by the Los Angeles Times, the multi award-winning play became LA's longest running comedy on its debut in 2008, playing to sell out audiences for a record breaking 21 months before a run off-Broadway in New York.

Now The Rep is preparing for the play's "swinging" Australian premiere, issuing an audience advisory warning for strong language, graphic scenes and very adult themes - a first for the company since its inception in 1908.

"It's quite risque, it's very sexy, it's 'in your face', but it's also hysterically funny and very poignant," says director Erik Strauts.

"The play looks at topics that we've all thought about, but maybe haven't been willing to speak about. Lots of people would have thought about their mates' partners, but most wouldn't do anything about it.

"It's Just Sex explores what might happen if we did and, in a really witty way, looks at how sex affects relationships and our feelings about life, love and commitment."

Hysterically funny and thought provoking, It's Just Sex is a modern comedy about lust, trust and what it really takes for a modern marriage to survive and thrive.
