WST's Mark Sylvester Named NAMT Treasurer

By:

The National Alliance for Musical Theatre has announced the election of Mark D. Sylvester, Managing Director of Philadelphia’s historic Walnut Street Theatre, as its new Treasurer.

Mr. Sylvester, a member of the NAMT Board since May of 2008, has enjoyed an extensive career spanning Summer Stock to Broadway as an actor, stage manager, box office treasurer, theatre manager, marketing director and general manager. At the age of 21 he managed his first theatre, New York’s historic Provincetown Playhouse. After several years working with commercial theatre, Mr. Sylvester has, since 1987, devoted his career to non-profit theatre companies. To date, Mark has been associated with over 300 stage productions. Widely regarded as a theatrical marketing expert, Mark lectures and consults with companies internationally. Since he joined the Walnut in 1994, it has become the most subscribed theatre company in the world.

Founded in 1985 and based in New York City, The National Alliance for Musical Theatre (NAMT), is a national service organization dedicated exclusively to musical theatre. NAMT membership includes not-for-profit and commercial theatres, presenting houses, universities, and independent producers. Located throughout 31 states and 8 countries, the 144 member organizations share a commitment to nurture the creation, production, and recognition of new musicals and classics. Last season, NAMT members cumulatively staged over 26,000 performances attended by over 15 million people and reached revenues totaling nearly half a billion dollars.

Philadelphia’s Walnut Street Theatre is widely regarded as one of America's most successful regional theatres. Under the leadership of President and Producing Artistic Director Bernard Havard and Managing Director Mark D. Sylvester, it has gained the distinction of being the most subscribed theatre in the world (over 57,000 subscribers annually) and the oldest theatre in continual operation in the English speaking world. Opened in 1809, The Walnut is a National Historic Landmark and The State Theatre of Pennsylvania, currently celebrating its 200th anniversary season.
