ANOTHER WAY TO LOOK AT THEATER?
- a play about a play about a play -
‘But then again what is original? If the art is an extension of the artist and if each person is an original being then doesn’t it just follow that even the most banal, indulgent and derivative work [be original?]’
This Is A Play
ODE. presents ‘This Is A Play’ by Daniel MacIvor at Havana Restaurant and Theater – January 8-10 2015
Actors perform a play within a play. Instead of hearing the story-line from their script, however, we hear their thoughts, hopes, fears and motivations from within their own minds as they struggle through the crazy stage directions from their 'dance background' director, attempting to talk over the persistent musical score by the overly philosophical composer, and trying to find meaning in the playwright’s words.
‘This Is A Play’ was first produced by Da Da Kamera and The Fringe of Toronto at the Bathurst Street Theatre in Toronto, in 1992. This is a Play is staged by arrangement with Pam Winter, Gary Goddard Agency, www.garygoddardagency.com
“Ode has no shape. It is for anybody everybody anywhere anytime. The only thing that connects us is our passion towards art and creating art and trusting the power of love.” - Mayumi Yoshida ODE. Founding Member, in answer to ‘What is Ode?’
Entering its second year, ODE. is going back to live art with this experimental One Act play!
ODE. is a Collective of Artists employing a community based resource model to create multimedia Art seated in loving intention.
“We are committed to ground-breaking, transformative story-telling within which the Artist is challenged to re-envision the archetypal portrayals of violence, intimidation and fear; to awaken in our colleagues a desire to address the subject matter from a fresh perspective. We wish to provide a platform for the artists to have their work showcased and shared while strengthening an Arts Community culture where the work we create stimulates artists and audiences alike to expand the imagination. We wish to inspire humankind to have a desire to extend its vision and seek the opportunity to exchange ideas and inspire moments of optimism. Together, we hope to form an international family of members to bring inspiration and innovation to every project and promote respect for diversity in an age of global community.”

With ‘This Is A Play’ by Daniel MacIvor, ODE. aims at bringing to life their motto “It’s not what to think, it’s how to question” with the help of a wonderful and diverse cast. Refreshing the way audiences relate to Theater, this ‘flash play’, running only 4 performances takes a look into what Theater is like from the inside out; raising the question at the heart of art: why and how do we create art; what drives us to tell our stories and compel our audiences to share these with us?
This Is A Play by Daniel MacIvor, directed by Mayumi Yoshida runs January 8, 9 at 8pm and January 10 at 2pm and 8pm
Doors open 30minutes before the show starts. The show runs approximately 40min (YES IT IS NICE AND SHORT)
Havana Restaurant – 1212 Commercial Drive, Vancouver BC, V5L 3X4
‘But is originality enough? What about concept? What about context. What about content? And how do I know that someone in Berlin or Japan isn’t creating an original score exactly like this original score making neither original?’
- from ‘This Is A Play’ by Daniel MacIvor
