In the last half-century, America has become the nation with the highest rate of incarceration in the world, authorized the execution of hundreds of condemned prisoners and continued to struggle to recover from a long history of racial injustice.

'Naked Darrow,' written and performed by Gary L. Anderson, looks at America's most hated and revered attorney, Clarence Darrow, as his great mind slips away. The play, based on the most current and intimate details of Darrow's private life, is a new and revelatory portrait of the man, not the legend. It presents an end-of-life scenario that will bring a shock of recognition to audiences who have, or may have imagined, their own struggle to face aging and to leave a legacy that may endure. Columbia University School of the Arts has announced the 2012-2013 Columbia Stages season of actors', directors' and playwrights' thesis productions at the Riverside Theatre, 3LD, the Connelly Theatre, and The Pershing Square Signature Center. Columbia Stages has expanded its season to a variety of venues throughout the City in order to provide third-year students with high-quality presentation spaces that meet the needs of their individual vision. The first production of the season will be Antigone/Progeny directed by Greg Taubman '13.

The Group Repertory Theatre, under the direction of Larry Eisenberg, will bring to its stage on June 3 probably the greatest and most revered of the classic melodramas, 'The Poor of New York' by Dion Boucicault. The play closes July 10 at the Lonny Chapman Theatre in the NoHo Arts District of North Hollywood.

Sometimes plays from the distant past are better left where they belong, or if revisited and given a fresh look, it is wise to make sure the pieces fit securely. Larry Eisenberg, a diligent and resourceful actor and director, ordinarily, has unwisely chosen to take Dion Boucicault's The Poor of New York, a melodrama in five acts, which was last seen on Broadway in 1857, and put a more realistic spin on it. It sounded interesting on paper, and especially with the promo that it would not be done for laughs but with a straightforward approach for pure dramatic effect. Despite some splendid staging and energetic cast contributions, the production, now onstage @ Group rep at Lonny Chapman is like a malfunctioning railroad car trying to catch up to the rest of the train.
