BWW Reviews: Dramatic License Production's Funny Presentation of THE NERDBWW Reviews: Dramatic License Production's Funny Presentation of THE NERD
by Chris Gibson - May 13, 2014

I would've written about Dramatic License Production's presentation of playwright Larry Shue's The Nerd sooner, but my computer crashed. Not once, but twice. It's fixed with the help of some technical assistance, but some things got lost in the process. Kind of like how I've generally felt about most productions of The Nerd that I've seen. The number is astounding since it's a community theatre staple, and yet none have really made me laugh. That's what makes DLP's staging so intriguing and entertaining. I'm finally seeing the play done justice by a sharp cast and finely tuned direction that allows the humor to shine through. So, this is another one of those times where my opinion is that you may have thought you'd seen the play before, but you really haven't. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Crown City Theatre Produces Rarely Seen FOREIGNER by Larry ShueBWW Reviews: Crown City Theatre Produces Rarely Seen FOREIGNER by Larry Shue
by Don Grigware - Feb 24, 2014

Larry Shue's career as playwright/actor fell far too short with his sudden death in 1985. He had written two howlingly funny farces The Nerd and The Foreigner, both of which have become cult classics. Each farce exposes an eclectic group of people to a mishmash of insanity. There is an underdog at the center who fakes his identity, and as a result of this switch in role-playing, the total chaos which arises bears unexpected fruit and a major miracle or two for one and all. Now onstage at Crown City Theatre in NoHo, a superb ensemble of actors bring off The Foreigner with tremendous skill and gusto. (more...)

BWW Reviews: SHE KILLS MONSTERS Slays AudiencesBWW Reviews: SHE KILLS MONSTERS Slays Audiences
by Alan Katz - Aug 25, 2014

The catchy and clever script more than makes up for the drags during movement pieces, and that dragging might have been as much from my desire to get back to the story and its characters as from anything else. I was giggling throughout, and there were some nice moments of genuine tenderness. Most of the characters were lovable, and those that weren't were eminently hateable, which is just as useful and twice as hard. If you lived through the 1990's, and especially if you were young during that time, you'll recognize these characters instantly, and this production is made to tickle your nostalgia thoroughly (more...)
