The third week of this summer's Mostly Mozart Festival, New York's acclaimed annual summer celebration of classical music, kicks off with a pair of all-Beethoven concerts by the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra leading one of the great works in the classical repertoire, Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, August 12 and 13, at Avery Fisher Hall. Conducting this large-scale choral work is Gianandrea Noseda, featured at Mostly Mozart for a second consecutive summer following his debut last summer leading Rossini's Stabat mater. Singers for the performance include soprano Erika Grimaldi (U.S. debut), mezzo-sopranoAnna Maria Chiuri (Mostly Mozart debut), tenor Gregory Kunde, and bass Ildar Abdrazakov (Mostly Mozart debut). TheConcert Chorale of New York, directed by James Bagwell, will accompany the Festival Orchestra and soloists. The Festival Orchestra will also perform Beethoven's Overture to The Consecration of the House, Op. 124, to open the concerts. Opera Atelier's 2014-2015 season continues with the Berlioz version of Gluck's Orpheus and Eurydice, a timeless love story based on the Greek myth. Opera Atelier most recently produced Gluck's opera in 2007, but this will mark the company's first exploration of Berlioz's 1859 version, in which the role of Orpheus is scored for a female contralto. Opera Atelier's co-artistic directors are proud that Tafelmusik has agreed to be part of this groundbreaking project, which marks the orchestra's furthest foray into 19th century orchestration. Written in 1779, it was premiered by the Paris Opera and was Gluck's penultimate opera, performed more than four hundred times over the next fifty years. He wrote a revised version in 1781 in German, Iphigenie auf Tauris which was staged as a tragic singspiel at the National Theatre in Vienna but proved less popular than the original French version. After a joyful comedic romp of The Chimney Sweep, what can you expect from Gluck's Iphigénie en Tauride? Written in 1779, it was premiered by the Paris Opera and was Gluck's penultimate opera, performed more than four hundred times over the next fifty years. He wrote a revised version in 1781 in German, Iphigenie auf Tauris which was staged as a tragic singspiel at the National Theatre in Vienna but proved less popular than the original French version. The New Group has announced today complete production dates for David Rabe's Sticks and Bones, the first production in the company's 20th Anniversary Season. Previews begin Tuesday, October 21, in advance of an Official Opening Night on Thursday, November 6. As announced earlier, Sticks and Bones, directed by Scott Elliott and featuring Richard Chamberlain, Nadia Gan, Holly Hunter, Morocco Omari, Bill Pullman, Ben Schnetzer and Raviv Ullman, will play a limited Off-Broadway engagement through December 14 at The New Group at The Pershing Square Signature Center (480 West 42nd Street).
