XANADU in Chicago will star Elizabeth Stanley as 'Kira' (played in the film version by Olivia Newton-John), Max Von Essen as 'Sonny,' Sharon Wilkins and Joanna Glushak as the evil Muses 'Melpomene' and 'Calliope,' respectively, and Larry Marshal as 'Danny' (played in the film version by Gene Kelly). Chicago Opera Theater (COT) General Director Andreas Mitisek today announces programming for COT's 2014 season, including two operas and a double-bill of one-acts. Mitisek comments, "It's a season that is 100% 20th century and 150% COT. New, rare and with contemporary relevance for a curious audience that is hungry for new theatrical experiences." The season opens with the Chicago Premiere of Duke Ellington's Queenie Pie, February 15 - 23, 2014. In the spring, COT presents a double-bill of Carl Orff's Die Kluge and Viktor Ullmann's Der Kaiser von Atlantis, May 31 - June 8, 2014. The season wraps in the fall with the Chicago Premiere of Ernest Bloch's Macbeth, September 13 - 21, 2014. Mitisek also comments "We increased our subscriber family by 18.5% in 2013. COT is THE place for adventure and discovery. We invite our audience on a journey into the good and evil of ambition." (more...)

Long Beach Opera's Artistic and General Director Andreas Mitisek announces the company's 2014 plans to produce five rarely performed 20th and 21st century, "Out Of Bounds," operas. The new season includes the Southern California premieres of Duke Ellington's "street opera" Queenie Pie and John Adams' controversial The Death of Klinghoffer; An American Soldier's Tale, Kurt Vonnegut 's provocative remake of Igor Stravinsky'sThe Soldier's Tale paired with Wynton Marsalis' jazz-driven A Fiddler's Tale; and a reprise of LBO audience favorite, David Lang's haunting The Difficulty of Crossing a Field. Three of the five composers-Adams, Marsalis and Lang-are actively contributing to today's music scene, while Stravinsky and Ellington made indelible marks on 20th century music. (more...)

Faye Butler, who portrays Aunt Eller in the summer revival of Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater's acclaimed and record-setting production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma!, will transition out of her Helen Hayes-nominated role to begin rehearsals for Arena Stage's 2011/12 season opening play Trouble in Mind. Butler will be replaced by Terry Burrell, who was last at Arena Stage in the 2007/08 world-premiere musical The Women of Brewster Place. Burrell joins the Oklahoma! company August 2, and her first performance will be August 9. Burrell was 'lovely and heartbreaking...spellbinding' in Signature Theatre's Show Boat (TalkinBroadway.com), and will be a strong addition to the cast. (more...)

The Harris Theater for Music and Dance has announced new dates for previously scheduled performances, including Chicago Opera Theater's production of Queenie Pie and Music of the Baroque's Handel & Bach-Italian Style. The Joffrey Ballet's Winning Works: Choreographers of Color Awards will now take place on March 1 at the Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place (175 East Chestnut Street). New dates for the Harris Theater Presents performances of Alonzo King LINES Ballet are still to be determined. Patrons who hold tickets for the LINES Ballet performances previously scheduled for February 27 and 28 will be contacted by a Box Office representative once new dates are confirmed. (more...)

On Sunday, January 12, 2014, Long Beach Opera (LBO) and the Museum of African American Art come together for an afternoon devoted to the Harlem Renaissance. As a lead-in to LBO's production of Duke Ellington's rarely performed opera Queenie Pie, "Duke and the Renaissance" will explore the rich variety of art, music and literature that came out of 1920s-1930s Harlem. Highlights include a guided tour of the museum, an all-Ellington live performance, bubbly drinks and pie (what else?) in a memorable tribute to an American icon and Harlem's era of cultural brilliance. BROADWAY LIVE! brings the magic of the Great White Way with song selections from South Pacific, Dreamgirls, Jersey Boys, Jekyll & Hyde, Guys and Dolls, Hair, Chicago, and many more. Barry Levitt serves as Musical Director with John Burr on bass. E. Faye Butler, who portrays Aunt Eller in the summer revival of Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater's acclaimed and record-setting production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma!, will transition out of her Helen Hayes-nominated role to begin rehearsals for Arena Stage's 2011/12 season opening play Trouble in Mind. Butler will be replaced by Terry Burrell, who was last at Arena Stage in the 2007/08 world-premiere musical The Women of Brewster Place. Burrell joins the Oklahoma! company August 2, and her first performance will be August 9. Burrell was 'lovely and heartbreaking...spellbinding' in Signature Theatre's Show Boat (TalkinBroadway.com), and will be a strong addition to the cast. (more...)
