MoMA Names Michelle Elligott Chief Of Archives

Glenn D. Lowry, Director of The Museum of Modern Art, announces that Senior Museum Archivist Michelle Elligott has been named Chief of Archives, effective July 1. In this newly established position, Ms. Elligott will lead the institution's program of acquiring, preserving, and making accessible archival and primary source collections related to 20th- and 21st-century art. Her chief responsibilities include enhancing the use of archives for research and in Museum exhibitions, leading an initiative for the creation of an electronic archive, and promoting online access to digitized items from the archives. Ms. Elligott joined MoMA as a Mellon Fellow in 1995 and subsequently became Assistant Archivist in 1996; Interim Manager, Museum Archives/Associate Archivist in 1998; and Rona Roob Senior Museum Archivist in 1999. As Chief of Archives, she will report to Peter Reed, Senior Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs. (more...)

Cabaret performers thinking about launching duo shows could certainly take a lesson in chemistry from watching and listening to singer Karen Oberlin and guitarist Sean Harkness in their current show, A Wish, which is based on their superb recently released CD of the same title, launched with two shows at Kitano on February 1 (to celebrate the CD release), and has taken up a once a month residency until late August at the Metropolitan Room (the next show is on June 25 at 9:30 pm). While theirs is not a romantic off-stage chemistry (both are happily quite happily married, thank you), on stage and in the recording studio Oberlin and Harkness have concocted a delicious musical interaction that conjures up romance to the nth degree. Galerie Lelong is pleased to present its first solo exhibition with Cuban-born artist Zilia Sanchez, Heroicas Eroticas en Nueva York. As a global citizen who has lived in Cuba, Spain, New York, and now Puerto Rico, Sanchez's hybridized shaped canvases unite the painterly and the sculptural, the formal and the psychological, and the masculine and the feminine. Only the second exhibition of Sanchez's work in New York in over thirty years,Heroicas Eroticas en Nueva York comprises paintings made in the artist's signature technique of stretching canvas over hand-molded wooden armatures, and spans fifty years of production. Many of the works on view have never been seen outside of Sanchez's adopted home of Puerto Rico. The exhibit will close on June 21. (more...)

Dear Bookworks Bookworm, I read a book this month that I had every intention of liking, but didn't. It had a story line that interested me but the characters were one dimensional and flat and the writing that was not worth writing home about. Rather than review a book that disappoints, I decided to review a movie that I had just seen with Clive Owen and Juliette Binoche, Words and Pictures. This is a movie well worth the ticket price. It is always a pleasure seeing a movie where actors do what they should be doing best, acting and where writers are doing what they should be doing best, writing. (more...)
