by BWW News Desk - Jun 30, 2015

In the summer of 2014, as Malian guitarist Vieux Farka Touré passed through New York, he got together with American vocalist Julia Easterlin for an impromptu studio session. Though this was the first time the two had met, in that session something divine happened, transcending what each was capable of on their own. Thus their collaboration was born and an entire album project, Touristes, conceived; to examine their respective musical roots and passions together and transform what they find into something entirely new and unique. BWW Reviews: A Big Shout Out to GMCLA and VEGAS, BABY!BWW Reviews: A Big Shout Out to GMCLA and VEGAS, BABY!
by Don Grigware - Jun 23, 2015

As part of season 36, GMCLA (Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles) outdid themselves in the presentation of their summer show Vegas, Baby! the weekend of June 20-21 at the Alex Theatre, Glendale. It was a fun, fun production like those of yesteryear, which featured much more than just the group's singing talent. Choreographers Billy Rugh and Michelle Benton had small groups from the chorus dancing their tushes off in several scenarios including a salute to showgirls (Cy Coleman's and Dorothy Fields' 'Pretty Legs'/'Big Spender'), gambling fever ('Luck Be a Lady'), a tribute to Rocky and Vegas boxing ('Rocky Medley'), and just a plain old mischievous look at female as well as scantily clad male dancers shimmying those strip club poles ('She Works Hard for the Money'). BWW Reviews: A WONDROUS TALE Of GUYS AND THEIR DOLLSBWW Reviews: A WONDROUS TALE Of GUYS AND THEIR DOLLS
by Kristen Morale - Aug 2, 2015

The Chatham Drama Guild, established eighty-four years ago and boasting one of the only truly volunteer managed community theater groups on the Cape, continues its summer season with Guys and Dolls, the well-known tale of gamblers-by-trade Nathan Detroit, Sky Masterson and their 'dolls' in the midst of Detroit's permanent floating crap game - all in the heart of 1950's New York City. The Directed by Pam Banas and musically directed by Charlie Gregson, Guild has succeeded in bringing to a Cape Cod audience a very heartfelt, genuine production of this classic musical which does well as well to capture the psychological and emotion angst of the characters as it does the tender and hopeful nature of those same individuals in the midst of falling in love - that is, in love with something other than their chance-based lives. BWW Review: Candlelight's IN THE HEIGHTS Is a WinnerBWW Review: Candlelight's IN THE HEIGHTS Is a Winner
by Don Grigware - Aug 18, 2015

Lin-Manuel Miranda's Tony and Grammy Award-winning show In the Heights had a lot to shout about when it played Broadway in 2008...in fact, it still does. First of all, it's a musical with and about Latinos - way overdue -plus it has a terrific book with a heartwarming storyline about a closely knit community. That's right, a real community, one that boasts a bevy of exceedingly real and likeable characters. Miranda also created a varied score with ballads & traditional pop melodies and salsa meshed together with rap. Candlelight Pavilion brings In the Heights to Claremont with a dynamite cast and slick direction by Benjamin Perez. It's full-out, enjoyable fare! (more...)
